Child's Mittens

Mittens

This pattern has served me well for about 40 years. As my children grew I added a size, when I moved to the US I converted it to use US sized needles and yarn. Then I was able to put all my notes together and turn the pattern into an excel chart and now I am using it for my grandchildren. I usually work them in the round on 4 dpn's but they can be worked flat on 2 needles.

Materials: Worsted Weight Cotton yarn,
Needles Sizes Size 3 US (11 UK) 3.25mm, Size 4 US (10 UK) 3.50mm or size needed to obtain gauge.

Tension/Gauge

Right Mitten Cuff
Cast on the following number of stitches Using Size 3 US (11 UK) 3.25 mm Needles

Knit in rib for the following number of rows

Thumb Gusset Change to Stocking Stitch and Size 4 US (10 UK) 3.5 mm Needles
Row 1-3	K1, P1, K3, P1, Knit to end
Row 4	K1, P1, inc 1 in next st, K1, inc 1 in next st, P1, Knit to end
Repeat Rows 1-4 until the “K3” has been increased to the following number of stitches
5	5	7	7	9	9	11	11
Repeat Rows 1-3 once
K1, P1, place the following number of stitches on a holder, turn work cast on 3 stitches turn work, K to end

Knit straight until the following number of rows have been worked excluding Ribbed Cuff

Living in Florida I am often asked why I knit hats and mittens for my Florida Grandchildren in this answer obviously Mom & Dad had the A/C too low. The fact that he took his clothes off to try on his hat & mittens we have not figured out but it does make for a good picture.
